That was an interesting question, Amy. I'm sure there are people frequenting this site that can provide you with better explanations than I can, but I'll give it a try :
Don't expect that changing muffler will give you more horsepower automatically. I think it works so, that if you improve the engine's breathing OUT that is usually best done by switching to an exhaustpipe, single wall, with wider inner diameter. The change of the muffler in this case is not so very important, I believe, unless the muffler is very restrictive. AND - now if you improve the engine's breathing OUT in order to get any effect out of it, youalso have to improve the breathin IN, which means changing to an easy-flow airfilter. This, again will lead to changing your mainjet one size up, otherwise the mixture of fuel and air will be too lean, and your valves will burn.
In my opinion I don't think the Savage needs more horsepower. 31 is ok for this type and size of bike. If you are driving legally, following the speed limits, there is hardly any place in the world where the Savage would be too slow... But let's not discuss that now, let's stay at the muffler-business. Try the Hartman re-building, if you want to sound impressive...
Good luck ! Peter.
